Google Maps has made a huge difference in how I pick places to photograph. In the 22 years I lived in Montana as a kid, I never knew Benton Lake Wildlife Refuge existed. Maybe it didn't back then, I'm not sure. But since I moved back, I've been scouring the satellite view of Google Maps... Continue Reading →
Choteau, Bynum, and Pendroy
The contractor had just finished building Dad's new house (for the most part--that story should be part of a different post.) What's the first thing you do when you finish a new house? Fill it up with rocks! Wait, what? That's not the first thing everyone does? Weird. At any rate, that's the first thing... Continue Reading →
Think Tank Retrospective 7 / What’s In My Bag
I've had the Think Tank Retrospective 7 bag for over two years now, so I figured it was about time I wrote about it. Since I was taking pictures of the bag for this post, I decided I'd throw in the obligatory "What's in my bag" post, as well. My main problem with bags (other... Continue Reading →
Milky Way
I’ve always been in awe of Milky Way photos, but have never really attempted one myself. Now that I’m out in Montana, and light pollution is easier to get away from, I figured I’d give it a shot. I have a long way to go, but I can definitely see how astrophotography is addicting. I... Continue Reading →
First People’s Buffalo Jump
My mom will outlive us all. She and her service dog walk all over town. To yoga, to classes, to the grocery store. Wherever she needs to go, they walk. They might take a bus in the winter when it's really cold, but only if it's really cold. So when she visits, she requires walks.... Continue Reading →
Lightning
Years ago, when I got my first 35mm, I would sit outside at night during a thunderstorm shooting lighting. I'd set my camera on bulb mode, and wait till a few bolts went off. After I moved to Portland, I was slightly disappointed that lightning and thunder weren't all that common. Now that I'm back... Continue Reading →
Eastern Montana/Miles City
I was born in Eastern Montana--maybe that's why I've always preferred flat lands to mountains. It's not that I don't like mountains, I just prefer to be able to see forever in any direction. Great Falls is pretty flat, but Eastern Montana is even better. So when I had a reason to drive out that... Continue Reading →
Watching Water
The combination of earlier snow melt and recent rain storms have pushed local rivers over their banks. From what I've read today, it looks like the Missouri river has peaked at 14.5 feet, and is expected to start receding soon. The Sun River is also starting to slowly recede. Several fishing access sites will remain closed until the areas can be cleaned up and deemed safe.
Catching Up
It occurred to me that I haven't posted anything in awhile, so I figured a catch-up post was in order.
In the last post, I introduced you to Malala. I shot her senior photos way back when, and had the opportunity to shoot with her again while I was in Portland.
I aquired a small boat while in Portland. It had been sitting for 10+ years, so I hit up Les Schwab to get new tires and to have the bearings checked. Unfortunately, on my way out of Portland, I blew one of the new tires. The spare looked 20 years old, but it held all the way to Missoula.
Malala
Back in 2011, I shot Malala's senior photos: This week I had the opportunity to get her in front of my camera again. Hopefully, we'll find time to do more shoots when I'm in Portland.
Ashlee, Kanchan, and Kayla in Wine Country
We headed out to Sokol Blosser and White Rose to tase some wine and grab some photos. Because wine goes with photography, obviously.
Kayla and Coffee
I never have quite as much time as I'd like when I visit Portland. So instead of big shoots that require driving and setup and all that, we opted for something simple this time. Ava Roasteria has a great location in Progress Ridge next to a large pond. There are outdoor tables on the west... Continue Reading →
