This year’s step critters

When I first moved into this house, I noticed a bull snake living underneath my front steps. He was pretty cool–kept mainly to himself and decimated the rodent population. After a few years, he disappeared.

This year, it’s rabbits. There were three–mama and two babies–but we seem to be down to just one baby now. Neighbor cats, raptors, coyotes, and one fox that may or may not still be around are keenly aware that they exist.

This morning, one of the babies ventured out for breakfast and we squeezed in a little portrait shoot. I’m hoping this one makes it, but the odds are stacked against her.

Update 4/26

She’s getting bolder. The other morning she ventured out past the garage into the field. I wasn’t sure she was going to come back, but she did. The threat of neighbor cats and coyotes is still high, but she’s beating the odds.
