The quarantine slowed the portrait project a bit, but I was able to grab shots of a few people the other day. I'm still committed to shooting all 52 this year, I'm just going to have to ramp it up a bit.
52 PORTRAITS : 7/52
I have this friend. One day, she decided she wanted to be a Highway Patrol Trooper. So she did it. Can't even begin to tell you how proud I am of her--she set a goal, and went after it. And, she was kind enough to let me take her picture.
FaceTime Photoshoot with Kayla
These are strange times. If I were a landscape photographer, I'd be set. But I prefer to photograph people, which is difficult when everyone is supposed to be staying at home. I saw other portrait photographers doing remote photoshoots over FaceTime/Zoom/whatever, so I asked Kayla if she'd be interested. She's always up for a challenge,... Continue Reading →
52 Portraits : 6/52
https://danielhedrick.smugmug.com/52portraits/52-Portraits-2020/i-5bbMsZM/A Dave was my art teacher back when I was a sophomore in high school. He teaches at University of Providence now, and still has a passion for all things creative. Drawing, ceramics, photography--one of the people responsible for driving me to create more.
https://danielhedrick.smugmug.com/52portraits/52-Portraits-2020/i-v5TJPSj/A I ran down to Missoula for the weekend, and ended up doing an impromptu photoshoot at 3am. #5 came out of that shoot. More proof that you don't need elaborate plans--just pick up the camera and start shooting.

Still working through friends and family before moving on to portraits of strangers. Baby steps. You might recognize Mya from the metal-themed (that became a blue-themed) portrait from last year. https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-hJCPcXJ/0/2ea07fee/X2/i-hJCPcXJ-X2.jpg She's a trooper.
52 Portraits : 1/52
Off to a slow start on this 52 Portraits project, but a weekend of ice fishing provided a great opportunity. I couldn't feel my fingers, the shot isn't well focused, and I didn't have my A7R III handy, but it pretty accurately depicts the cold we endured packing up camp on Sunday morning. https://danielhedrick.smugmug.com/52portraits/52-Portraits-2020/i-JSdtd4h/A Every... Kayla – September 2019
This Portland trip has been busier than most, but Kayla and I managed to carve out a couple hours for a quick shoot. It was a gorgeous day in Portland, so the window light was perfect. There's something to be said for working with the same models for years. We are able to spend less... Continue Reading →
Quick Shoot with Lisa
We had talked about doing a shoot almost two years ago, but hadn't actually had the opportunity until recently. Lisa is an awesome person with no modeling experience, but she still made my job easy. We wandered around the Ulm area, then headed up to the First Peoples' Buffalo Jump. It was great to finally... Continue Reading →
Quick afternoon shoot with Ashlee
I have a tendency to overbook myself when I come to Portland. Obviously, I want to spend as much time as possible with family, but there are other people I need to see when I'm here, too. My three favorite models are some of those people. I have a shoot with all three planned for... Continue Reading →
Metal Portraits with Mya and Kaylee
I've been trying to come up with a metal-themed print for the wall of my buddy's office building. I shot trains, random abstract metal, and anything else I could think of, but none of them really impressed me. Then I realized it needed to be a portrait. Luckily, I have friends with kids who thought... Continue Reading →
Malala
Back in 2011, I shot Malala's senior photos: This week I had the opportunity to get her in front of my camera again. Hopefully, we'll find time to do more shoots when I'm in Portland.
