Tuesday Tips: The iPhone Action Button

What is it?

iPhone Pros since the 15 have replaced the mute toggle switch with an action button. What you do with that action button is up to you. Access the Action Button options in your iPhone Settings.

What are the options?

  1. Silent Mode
  2. Focus
  3. Camera
  4. Visual Intelligence
  5. Flashlight
  6. Voice Memo
  7. Recognize Music
  8. Translate
  9. Magnifier
  10. Controls
  11. Shortcut
  12. Accessibility
  13. No Action

What have I been using it for?

I originally used it to trigger a voice memo, but noticed I really don’t use voice memos much. So I switched it to a Shortcut that opens Final Cut Camera. If I’m just grabbing a quick snapshot or short video, I use the general camera button. If I know I’m about to shoot some video I’m going to want to use for something a little more polished, I use the Action Button to open Final Cut Camera (or Blackmagic Camera, etc. I bounce around a bit.)

The Shortcuts option opens up a world of possibilities. I’ve been playing with Shortcuts more and more, so maybe that’ll be a separate post.

The nice thing is that you have to hold the button down for a second or two before it does whatever action you assign to it. So no accidental actions.

What about you? What do you use the Action Button for?
